Joe Loughran

Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Entering his 17th season at the Scarlet Raider helm, Joe Loughran has turned Rutgers-Newark into a perennial post-season contender while pushing the program to unprecedented heights.

Before his arrival in the Brick City, Rutgers-Newark had never gone to an NCAA Championship Tournament. Now the Scarlet Raiders have been in the Big Dance twice (2009-10 and 2012-13).

Last season, Loughran eclipsed the 250-win plateau while his overall career mark stands at 251-187 (.573 winning percentage). He has guided Rutgers-Newark to a remarkable 12 winning campaigns, 10 NJAC Championship Tournament berths (including two championship game appearance in 2009 and 2013), nine Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Championship Tournament appearances (2011 runners-up), and two NCAA Championship Tournament trips (2010, 2013).

His career record is by far the best in Rutgers-Newark’s NCAA Division III history and the Raiders’ success in the NJAC under his guidance, including a stretch of eight consecutive winning seasons in conference play from 2008-2016, is unprecedented.

Kevin Grek is in his first season as the graduate assistant coach with Rutgers University-Newark men’s basketball program. Grek will assist in all aspects of the program effective immediately.

“We are lucky to bring Kevin on board here at Rutgers-Newark,” said Loughran. “He was a really good player in our conference for four years, he knows the NJAC well and he is going to be a great asset for our program and its student-athletes.”

Grek is very familiar with the Scarlet Raiders and the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) as a 2017 graduate of Kean University. He was a member of the Cougars’ men’s basketball program for four seasons and played in 80 contests.
