The Grant Center arena is home of the Cougars'Men's Basketball team. This facility features retractable bleachers that seat more than 2,500 Averett fans that surround the main court. David Doino has served as the head coach of the Averett men’s basketball program since August 2014 and has led the Cougars to a pair of USA South Conference regular season championships in his first four seasons.
In his first season as Averett, he coached the Cougars to an 18-9 overall record, a 11-3 mark in the conference and the 2014-15 USA South Conference regular season championship, the program’s sixth title. He also coached three USA South All-Conference selections, including two USA South First Team performers.
In his second season, Averett went 15-11 while knocking off a Division II opponent and several solid non-conference foes from the competitive Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). He also produced one all-conference selection.
Brandon Baker joined the Averett University men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach in July 2018.
A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Baker was a four-year member of the Averett men’s basketball program and was a part of two USA South Conference regular season championships. He earned USA South All-Sportsmanship Team honors as a senior and twice received the program’s service award at the annual athletics awards banquet.
In addition to his playing experience, Baker has served as a counselor for Averett’s summer basketball camps.Baker graduated from Averett with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in May 2018. He is currently pursuing his master’s of business administration from Averett.
Kyle Bush joined the Averett University men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in August 2018.
Bush came to Averett from the University of Charleston in West Virginia, where he served as an assistant coach during the 2017-18 season. In addition, Bush gained experience helping coordinate and coach basketball in Scotland. He’s also served as a camp counselor at Duke University’s basketball camp and was a personal basketball trainer.
Bush played collegiately at NAIA Union College, where he was a two-time conference champion on the Bulldogs’ top-10 ranked team. He went on to play and coach in the Scottish National League. A native of Ashland, Kentucky, Bush graduated from Union in December 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management.
Sergey Samoilenko is one of the faculty athletic mentors (FAM) for the Averett University men’s basketball team. He joined the Averett faculty in 2013 as an associate professor of computer science and computer information systems and also serves as chair of the department. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Samoilenko is a former competitive bobsledder, and he also competed in decathalons in his home country before coming to Averett.
