2015-16 Season In Review: Men's Golf
Southern Hills Golf Course is a fun yet challenging 6100 yard, par 72, course tucked away in the historic city of Danville, Virginia. Designed by renowed architect, Gene Hamm, the course features bent grass greens and bermuda grass tees and fairways. The namesake of the course is the moderate elevation changes that yields spectacular views throughout your round. Mark Hopkins was hired as Averett Universitys mens golf head coach in May 2016. Hopkins, who has more than 30 years of experience in the golf industry, previously coached the Averett golf program for two seasons from 1996-98.
Hopkins currently owns and operates Southern Hills Golf Course in Danville, a venture he began in 2010. Previously, he was the president of Aurora Golf Management based in Greensboro, North Carolina, for eight years. The company managed Southwick Golf Course in course in Graham, North Carolina. His work experience also includes being the head golf professional at Southern Hills, which was then called Glen Oak Country Club, and Director of Golf at Caswell Pines Golf Club.
A native of Danville, Hopkins graduated with an associates degree from Danville Community College in 1979. He and his wife, Vera, have four daughters – Hannah, Mariah, Sarah and Norah.
Mariah Hopkins joined the Averett University mens golf program as an assistant coach in June 2016.
Hopkins enjoyed a successful four-year career on the womens golf team at Division I Western Carolina University, where she finished 15th on the Catamounts all-time strokes list and was a team captain her senior season. Hopkins had four top-five finishes and five top-10s with a 78.07 average over 107 rounds in 41 events. She finished third three times and had a fourth-place finish in the 2014 Southern Conference Championship, which earned her a spot on the SoCon All-Tournament Team.
In the classroom, Hopkins also succeeded at Western Carolina. Hopkins earned Womens Golf Coaches Association Academic All-America honors in each of her final three seasons, and she was named to the SoCon honor roll all four years. Hopkins also was active in Western Carolinas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as the philanthropy chair in 2014-15 and secretary in 2015-16.
