Dear parents: A message from our camp director, Mark Bradshaw

Due to continued Covid-19 restrictions at Arizona State University facilities, we unfortunately have to cancel our planned sun devil aqua sport camp for this summer. We had been all looking forward to having the chance to work with your children this summer, yet we’ll have to wait till next year.

Please keep your eyes open for our information to reach you in Jan of 2021.

Continued health to our Camper families as we all navigate these uncertain times.

Yours truly,

Mark Bradshaw

ABOUT US

Sun Devil Aqua Sport Camps

Our Camp mission is to introduce campers to various water sport disciplines – swimming, diving and water polo and doing so in a safe and comfortable environment, open to any and all 7 to 13 year olds.

The Aqua Sport camp is not an intensive sport camp. It is however, a camp that combines a unique blend of fun all the while learning skills in these disciplines. Rest assured, participation and effort as well as learning good techniques are components of this camp. We want our campers to experience the fun and enjoyment of the water and the overall camp experience.

Our instructors include some or the finest athletes at ASU. Furthermore, our camp supervising instructors, who are all current and former swimmers, water polo players and divers, bring a wealth of knowledge that will result in a rewarding summer camp experience for all.

Mark Bradshaw

Completing his 23rd season at ASU in 2019-20, Mark Bradshaw has proven to be one of the most successful NCAA diving coaches in the country. With Bradshaw at the helm of the diving program, ASU has produced some of the NCAA’s finest divers, including four-time NCAA Champion Joona Puhakka and six-time All-Americans Micky Benedetti and Trisha Tumlinson. Under Bradshaw’s guidance, ASU has had nine divers earn four NCAA individual titles and 29 All-American honors. In addition, Bradshaw has been named NCAA Diving Coach of the Year twice, in 2003 and 2005.

With eight Pac-10 Men’s Diving Coach of the Year and one Women’s Diving Coach of the Year plaques on his wall, Bradshaw has earned more Pac-10 Diving Coach of Year honors than any other coach in conference history and has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year the most out of all ASU Head Coaches. His divers have earned a total of nine Pac-10 Diver of the Year awards and six Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year honors.

Before coming to ASU, Bradshaw served as the diving coach at Ohio University and at the United State Military Academy. Bradshaw also served as Finland’s head diving coach for the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. As a diver, he was a four-year All-American at Ohio State University and was the 1983 3-meter NCAA champion. He also represented the United States in the 1988 Olympic Games, finishing fifth on the 3-meter. Bradshaw earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ohio State in 1985 and his master’s in the same discipline in 1987. Bradshaw is a 1980 graduate of Springfield High School. During his four years at Springfield HS, he lettered four times in swimming and diving and earned two letters in football. As an individual competitor, Bradshaw went undefeated in his diving meets. A four-time state champion, he was twice named an All-American.

Alexandra Popa

Alex is originally from Romania. She started swimming at 7 years old and competed and in multiple national and international competitions achieving great results.

In 2010 Alex received and accepted a full tuition athletic scholarship at the University of Alabama. Her outstanding athletic performance qualifies her as a member of the 2011 All-SEC Freshman Team (Southeastern Conference). The following year Alex received the Academic Honor Roll award for outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments.

In 2012 she transferred to Arizona State University where she placed 3rd at the PAC 12 Championship in 200yard breaststroke and broke the ASU school record in 200 Individual Medley, record which still stands today. Alex was two-time Team Captain of the Swimming and Diving team and made the Dean List in 2013 and 2014.

At the international level, one of the biggest athletic achievements was the participation in the World Championship in 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.

Alex graduated in May 2014 from ASU with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary studies in Psychology and Criminology. The following year she pursued a Master’s degree in Higher and Post-secondary Education Administration, which she completed in May 2015.

A series of unfortunate physical issues that didn’t allow her to continue as an athlete and the passion she has for the sport motivated Alex to chase a career as a swimming coach. Coaching from 2015 until now, she has achieved great results with her swimmers at Swim Neptune including a 14 year old Olympic Trials qualifier.

Current ASU Swimmers, Divers, and Water Polo Players

ASU Swimmers, Divers and Water Polo Players are prepared to coach and teach all ability levels. The Aqua Sport Camp takes great pride in the quality of instruction these young athletes provide to our younger campers. All of our student athlete instructors have experience in teaching either swim or dive lessons, and playing skills for water polo. Some of these student athletes aspire to become teachers and or coaches when they earn their degree from ASU. Though camp session sizes vary, we will do our best to keep the instructor to camper activity ratio at a high of 1-12. Most of our camps have a 1-9 ratio. Not to mention, they are some of the finest student athletes here at ASU.
