Syracuse, N.Y. – Le Moyne College head men’s soccer coach Tom Bonus announced his retirement on Wednesday morning, effective July 31.

“I would like to thank all the great people I worked with during my time at Le Moyne,” said Bonus. “I would especially like to thank all the players and assistant coaches who gave me everything they had and helped to make this program such a success.”

Bonus retires following 26 years as a collegiate head coach, during which time he posted a record of 275-160-40, including a mark of 249-136-37 (.634) in 22 seasons (23 years) leading the Dolphins. A two-time Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year, his 249 victories are the most in the program’s history. He guided the Dolphins to 17 10-win seasons in his 22 campaigns at the helm of the program and led the Dolphins to 21 NE10 Championships appearances and seven NCAA Championships appearances. The 21 NE10 Championships berths came in the last 21 years and the streak is the second-longest active stretch in the conference. The 2005 and 2009 NE10 championship-winning head coach, he finished the 2022 season ranked 14th among active Division II coaches with his 275 career victories. In his time in charge of the Dolphins, he had eight NSCAA/USC/D2CCA All-America selections, 41 NSCAA/USC All-Region honorees, three players earn major awards from the Northeast-10 Conference, 25 earn first team all-conference honors, 31 collect second team accolades and 29 named to the third team, in addition to 12 all-rookie team selections.

“The impact that Tom Bonus has had on our student-athletes, and our men’s soccer program as a whole, is immeasurable,” said Le Moyne Director of Athletics & Recreation Bob Beretta. “Tom has served as an incredible coach and role model to thousands of Dolphins for more than two decades.

“Tom helped develop our program into a perennial championship contender. He will retire as one of the winningest coaches in collegiate soccer history and certainly one of the most successful head coaches here on ‘the Heights.’ It’s bittersweet to lose someone who has been so dedicated to our mission as Tom, but we’re grateful for the work he has done to position the Le Moyne men’s soccer program for future success as we begin our Division I excursion in just a few short weeks. We congratulate Tom, and wish him, Carrie and Riley the best in the next chapter of their life journey.”

The best season of his career on the Heights, and the best season in the program’s history, came during the 2009 campaign, when the Dolphins posted an 18-3-3 record. After finishing the regular season second in the Northeast-10 Conference standings, Le Moyne went on to win the Northeast-10 Championship for the second time in five years by defeating Southern Connecticut State at home, 2-1. Following a bye in the opening round of the NCAA East Regional, the host Dolphins knocked off Franklin Pierce for the third time that season, 1-0, for their program-record 18th victory of the season. After battling to a 1-1 tie with Southern New Hampshire in the NCAA Quarterfinals, the Dolphins defeated the Penmen, 3-2, in a shootout to capture the East Region championship and advance to the NCAA Semifinals in Tampa, Fla. In the semifinals, the Dolphins had their season ended with an 8-2 loss to eventual National Champion, Fort Lewis. A week and a half later, Bonus was named the 2009 NSCAA/MONDO East Region Coach of the Year. Two of Bonus’ charges were recognized for their play with All-America honors with junior Angelo Reina becoming the program’s second First Team selection, while classmate Sean Lawlor was named to the Second Team.

In his final season on the sideline, Bonus guided the Dolphins to the NE10 Championship game for the fifth time. The Dolphins were the seventh seed in the conference tournament and went on to upset second-seeded Southern Connecticut State in the first round and advance past sixth-seeded Adelphi in penalty kicks in the semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Franklin Pierce in the conference title game to close out the year with a 7-6-6 record.

After guiding the Dolphins to a 6-9-1 record in his first season, 2000, he led the Dolphins to five consecutive 10-win seasons, with the 2001 to 2003 stretch being the first back-to-back-to-back span in the program’s history. Bonus guided the Dolphins to the precipice of the NCAA tournament with the program’s then-winningest season in 2004. For his efforts, Bonus was named the 2004 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year. He led the Dolphins to an 11-1-1 league mark and the second seed in the conference playoffs. Le Moyne completed the season with a 17-2-1 overall record. The team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 setback to UMass Lowell in the Northeast-10 Conference semifinals. Despite a ranking of No. 9 in the NSCAA/adidas national poll, Le Moyne was not selected for the NCAA tournament. The Dolphins set a new program record with 17 wins and won a program-record 15 consecutive contests prior to the semifinal setback. Le Moyne outscored the opposition 56-17.

The next year, Bonus led the Dolphins to a 14-6-2 mark, but more importantly, guided Le Moyne to its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship and its first NCAA tournament trip since 1977. Le Moyne posted a program-record 11 shutouts and outscored its opposition 44-23 in its first conference championship season. The Dolphins rolled to their first NE10 Championship with a 2-0 quarterfinal win over American International, a 2-1 double overtime win over Bryant and a 1-0 title game win at Franklin Pierce. Four days after defeating the Ravens for the league crown, the Dolphins dropped their NCAA opener 5-0 to eventual NCAA runner-up Franklin Pierce.

In 2007, Bonus returned his team to the NCAA tournament for the second time in a span of three seasons. The Dolphins earned a trip to the New England Regional, held in Rindge, N.H., after posting a regular-season record of 14-2-2, including a 9-2-2 mark in Northeast-10 competition. However, the Dolphins were shut out in the opening round by eventual National Champion Franklin Pierce, falling by a score of 5-0.

The following season, Bonus guided the Dolphins to their second consecutive NCAA tournament berth and third appearance in a four-year span. After advancing to the NE10 Championship game for the second time in four seasons, the Dolphins suffered a 1-0 setback at Southern New Hampshire. Bonus’ charges then took on Franklin Pierce in the opening round for the third time in four years, but fell to the Ravens, 1-0, in double overtime in Brookhaven, N.Y.

After the Dolphins averaged 10 wins a season over the next five years, Bonus led the Dolphins back to the NCAA Championships three times between 2015 and 2018. The 2015 squad went 12-6-1, including a mark of 9-0 at home, and earned the fifth NCAA Championships appearance under Bonus. The next year, the Dolphins advanced to the NE10 Championship game for the fourth time, but were edged by seventh-ranked Adelphi. They fell in the NCAA first round four days later to finish the campaign at 14-5-2. Bonus and the Dolphins captured the NE10 regular season championship for the first time in the program’s history in 2018 with a record of 10-2-1 in league play. They hosted an NCAA Championships game for just the third time in the program’s history and closed out the year with a 13-4-1 record. Marek Weber became the third player in the program’s history to earn First Team All-America honors from the coaches association.

Prior to his hiring at Le Moyne, Bonus had been the assistant men’s soccer coach at Hobart College for three seasons and served as the Director of Coaching and Player Development for the New York State West Olympic Development Program.

After beginning his coaching career in 1993 as an assistant at this alma mater, SUNY Plattsburgh, he was named the head coach at Keuka College and posted a 26-24-3 record during the 1994, 1995 and 1996 seasons. As Keuka’s head coach, Bonus led the Warriors to their first-ever winning season, a 12-6-1 mark in 1996.

Bonus was an all-SUNYAC academic performer and starting center midfielder for the 1992 Plattsburgh team that captured the SUNYAC regular season title and advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament, he was also named an NJCAA All-American. A graduate of Liverpool High School, Bonus competed in the Empire State Games for the Central Region soccer team from 1990-92 and played with the Syracuse Blitz in the National Indoor Soccer Championship.

Player and Parent Testimonials

I wanted to thank you and your staff for offering such a wonderful experience with your soccer programs. My daughter attended camp this week for the first time and she had a great time with all positive feedback- despite the rainy week  She was sorry to see the week come to an end. So, thanks a lot to you and your staff.

LAURA KIRKPATRICK

My daughter has participated in the Finishing Touch Soccer Camps the past two years and loved it – each day offered a great mix of individual drills and scrimmages along with other fun activities so she was never bored. The head coaches and student-athlete coaches are smart, kind, and encouraging. While my daughter attended camp with friends from her club team, she always leaves with new friends. She loves being on a college campus, playing on the turf field, eating in the dining hall, and building relationships with the student-athletes who are great role models.

KASHA GODLESKI

When I was looking to send our 9 year old to soccer camp this summer for her 1st time the 1st coaches that came to mind were Tom and Carrie Bonus. I trusted them to take care of her and help her get the total experience. And did she ever! Every day she came home with a smile on her face and something new she learned that she wanted to practice. You can’t beat that!
